Of the 386,366 Fairlanes and Torinos made in 1969, only 14,885 had the Cobra Jet V8 4V 355 horsepower engine, and of these, only 3,786 were the Hardtop (Formal Roof) body style, and of these, only 1,324 were R code Ram air induction with automatic transmissions. This car is a numbers matching car whose engine VIN stamp matches the car’s dash and Fender support VIN.
The car includes factory power steering, factory power front disc brakes, Traction-Lok rear end, C6 automatic transmission, bucket seats, console and AM radio. It was restored in July 2008 with two main goals – make the car safe to drive (since it has so much power), and keep it as original as possible. Only the tires, ignition, after-market gauges and exhaust are modern (brand new BFG radials and new Pertronix electronic ignition). All the other parts were ordered from 7 different Ford suppliers in the US. Over 350 hours went into the nuts and bolts restoration.
During the restoration, the whole interior, engine, drivetrain, front and rear suspension and fenders were removed; all the lines were replaced (oil, gas, brake, transmission, electrical); the floors, part of the firewall, and all the torque boxes (the most important structural part of this uni-body car) were replaced with new metal; and every single nut and bolt on the car’s chassis, suspension and interior was replaced with the correct NOS parts. We installed heavy duty Ford suspension parts, front sway bar, new custom rear leaf springs, custom front rad support and welded in support braces to make the car's structure absolutely rigid and stronger than originally designed.
The engine has the correct part numbers and date coded intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and heads, the correct modern carb, Ram Air intake and snorkel, and NOS Cobra finned aluminum valve covers (very hard to find). The engine was tuned and dyno'd in September 2008 - all cylinders are at 10:1 compression with premium gas and the car measured 372-382 horsepower at the flywheel (248 horse power at the rear wheels with existing restrictive stock exhaust manifold & the C6 automatic transmission - about 33-35 Percent power reduction). The Car was originally Black Jade (a dark green), but was repainted white by the previous owner. A MARTI report is available.
The car was purchased with 59,736 miles on the odometer, and has had 2,000 miles put on it since restoration. The 2,000 miles put on the car during the 4 months from July to Oct 2008 included trips to the Right Coast Syracuse Nationals show in July, the largest car show on the East Coast (7,000 cars), and the Illinois / Michigan Fairlane Torino show in Chicago in August, and has won local show awards as well as one of the "Cruise Nationals" top 60 car award winners in Ontario for 2008 and is scheduled for a Spring/Summer 2009 photo shoot by Muscle Car Review magazine.
